IPhone 3G used's review (The real thing) 『Wow! I'll never bother with a yoga instructor after this gem. Richard's words perfectly instruct your progress - as if he were there in the room - to assure that you learn the primary series correctly. He must be a very experienced teacher as his analogies and what he says keep you focused on the breathing and exploring all parts of the posture(s) together. I really learned a lot from what he said, discovering more and more each time (which is good because you don't look at the screen much while you're doing it!).
One especially high-quality feature of this DVD is the variety of starting points. You can start with 1. a poetic opening chant, 2. an informative introduction, 3. a discussion of breathing, 4. Sun Salutation instruction, 5. The complete 90 minute primary series, 6. Standing postures, 7. Seated postures, 8. Finishing postures and 9. contact information.
This DVD will last me several years, as I can only follow him for the first half hour so far. But if you want to see the absolute limits of the human body, watch through to the end of the 90 minutes. He's not a circus freak - it's way beyond that, stuff that will really take a good sense of humor to even approach. But he makes it look effortless.
I also tried Baron Baptist and while Baron is sincere, Richard is the real thing. My body has changed internally, with the proper form from practicing this regularly. I can't express the relief I feel now with a liberated lower spine, neck, legs, abdomen, breath, etc - except to say that everyone should do the work it takes to feel this way. It takes time but then it lasts. 』
(Great way to learn primary series!) 『Richard Freeman is a wonderful teacher -- very clear and articulate. This simple but highly effective DVD is a great tool for learning the primary Ashtanga vinyasa series. If you're not familiar with this type of yoga, just know that even though it's called "primary" it's not for beginners . . . but with Richard's clear instruction solid practitioners of yoga can learn the sequence as taught by Patabbhi Jois.』
(Look No Further Than Richard Freeman) 『For the best Ashtanga teacher in the US, look no further than Richard Freeman. This DVD is a little slow at first, but if you watch carefully, will give you many slight adjustments that will help you in the long run as you advance in this vigorous and rewarding yoga practice. The instruction is clear and direct. There isn't a laugh track, so it's hard to tell at times, because his delivery is DRY, but Richard is also very funny. Highly recommended.』

Ryan's introduction and the pairing of his vinyasas with the wonderful liturgical music of my youth (i.e. St. Louis Jesuits from 1970's). The settings for each Yoga Prayer are quite serene, if not at times austere.
However, I honestly feel that music with lyrics can be distracting when I try to practice, plus his choreography is not for beginners as it moves rather quickly.
The intrinsic value in this dvd is to allow Christians (and other people of faith) to open their minds and hearts to the notion of using their bodies to glorify God each day through both fitness and relaxation. It is a beautiful, healthful, peaceful concept that I hope more people will come to experience in some way.』
(Choreography is anointed!) 『This DVD is one of my favorite yoga workouts! It's a quick (32 minute, I think) workout that incorporates all the movements of the spine. The music is indeed "soul-stirring"! I usually do this workout in the mornings or when I want a shorter practice. It gets my body limber and ready for the day, and gets my heart in the right place, too--aware of God and His great goodness to me. I love the way Father Ryan has choreographed the poses to flow with the words and feel of the music. This meaningful and well-timed choreography makes the sequences easy to learn so that you don't have to keep eyeing the TV. (I've even bought all the songs and put a playlist on my ipod so that I can do this workout while traveling or away from the TV.) I love doing the warrior poses to the song, "The Peace Prayer," and kneeling poses to "Blest Are They,"--a song about the Beatitudes. The workout on this DVD offers a beautiful and holistic experience for a Christian practicing yoga. It also includes an excellent teaching from Father Ryan on why a Christ-centered yoga practice is a "good fit" for Christians.』
(Such a lift!) 『I still haven't done this whole DVD, because I just recently received it. But, I tell you, this is a beautiful and uplifting experience.
I love that Fr. Thomas Ryan is visible in the Catholic community, showing us that it is right and good to care for and pray with our bodies, so that we may be whole beings in communion with our Lord.
I also strongly recommend the book, Reclaiming the Body in Christian Spirituality.
I can't wait to read his other work and, hopefully, make it to a Paulist retreat! 』 『As many as half of Americas estimated 15 million yoga practitioners come from a Christian background. IPhone 3G used's review (Basic yet slow-moving yoga workout for beginners) 『I am a neophyte when it comes to yoga, and in many respects this DVD was an excellent resource. Instructor Sara Ivanhoe, who is clearly an accomplished yoga instructor, walks the viewer through the most basic "daily dozen" yoga moves in about 45 minutes. Each move is explained carefully and is held for six breaths as Ms. Ivanhoe demonstrates the move. From this foundation, Ms. Ivanhoe explains slightly more advanced poses and techniques, but we're definitely talking approachable, manageable stuff for beginners.
All this is supplemented by the usual "For Dummies" learning aids, like mythbusters and jargon translators. All in all, this is a helpful introduction to the world of yoga.
Why only four stars? Because the workout moves so slowly. After the second time through the DVD, I didn't need the detailed explanation of each move and simply wanted Ms. Ivanhoe to guide me through the workout without exposition. Unfortunately, there is no "efficient workout" option on the menu, so once you're familiar with the poses, you're going to need to keep the remote handy so you can fastforward through her speeches.
This is nothing against Ms. Ivanhoe as an instructor - she's both knowledgeable and, admittedly, very easy on the eyes. I'm not getting dirty here - it's essential for a beginner to watch how to do these poses correctly, so it helps to have an attractive, proficient instructor when you're watching the same thing over and over again.
So while a yoga DVD is preferable to a yoga book in that you get to watch an actual person do the entire pose - as opposed to a mere snapshot contained in a book - the inability to excise the lengthy exposition of each pose is a bit of a problem. Therefore, the DVD isn't excellent and isn't worth five stars. But it's clearly worth four, and any beginner should give it a try before spending money on an expensive yoga class.』
(Ummm... Dummies.. No, VERY beginner? YES) 『This is a great addtion to the beginners library of yoga... however, after you've watched it more than 2 or 3 times you're going to be ready for something new. The teacher does an excellent job discribing the postures, however this may become TOO much once you're ready to start flowing in your postures. (Best for beginners) 『I borrowed this from the library because of the reviews stating it was so basic that you might only watch it a few times. I plan to buy it now though because it is so helpful to an absolute beginner like myself and the slower pace is more relaxing to me. I believe the Yoga for Dummies will better prepare me for the Yoga Journal DVDs which I also enjoy, but am not quite ready for yet.
I'd also mention that my eight year old loves to do this with me and asked me to purchase more of Sara Ivanhoe's DVDs.』
(Great tool for beginners) 『The best way to learn yoga would be in a class setting with an instructor there to guide you. This is second best! Sara does a great job of explaining what to do and what not to do. The tone remains light - you don't feel like you have to be perfect. One complaint would be that after you get comfortable with the poses in the first practice, you will likely find the detailed instructions slow the practice down too much.』
(Easy, Simple, Fun) 『This is a great selection for those who are beginners. The host is fun, easy to follow, and very nice in personality. You won't be left behind or in the dark. Fundamental postures are explained and demonstrated slowly with an emphasis on breathing and motion. Sara Ivanhoe teaches 12 basic poses that are termed the "daily dozen" and offers challenges and modifications to each of these moves. Ivanhoe presents these concepts in an approachable and calming manner that adds to the overall relaxed feeling that this session exudes. Newcomers to the practice of yoga will learn jargon, essential postures, and focusing techniques. Experienced participants may find some information redundant, but Ivanhoe offers such thorough explanations about each posture that you can't help but expand your existing knowledge of yoga. As the mountain pose, standing forward bend, and downward facing dog are explained (not to mention the nine other poses within the "daily dozen"), proper body alignment becomes the focus. Meticulous attention is given to the connection between breathing and body movement with several reminders to keep the spine in "neutral alignment." (Mastering the Basics) 『The book's title might be "Learning How To Do Yoga Without Turning Yourself Into A Pretzel. No doubt, Mastering the Basic is a better choice for the book's title. The trick to doing yoga is knowing the preliminary moves that eases one into the posture without strain or exertion. This book does just that with illustrations and concise easy to follow text printed next to the illustration.
Make no mistake about it, yoga can become "entwining" but this book stops short of that. From the most elementary posture one progresses to more complicated postures in what seems effortless. The result is, "Hey, look what I can do.".
Therefore knowing what to do and how to do it makes all the difference in the world in sticking with your yoga practice and this book does exactly that. If you ever wanted to learn how to do yoga this book would be a big help in getting you started down that path.』
(Great foundation for yoga practice) 『I am reviewing the DVD which has two programs: Flexibility Strength and Balance and Deepen&Strengthen.
This dvd is great for beginners. You are lead through a series of warm-ups that are basic to all yoga moves. You learn how to move and hold the body which is essential for a good yoga foundation. There are two sessions. I prefer the Flexibility session to the Deepen and Strengthen. The 2nd session makes you hold the positions for long periods. The young woman demonstrating the moves is Amazing! This is probably "old school" for many people, but without the foundation, you might as well just be exercising. Not for every day use, but great when I don't feel like twisting my spine into a pretzel.』
(Just what it says) 『I feel this book does what it says, covers the basics. It's easy to read and the pictures clearly show each pose. There is more to read than expected, and it is all beginner-friendly¬ over-kill at all. A good book that provides exactly what it says it will.』
(A must for Yoga students and teachers alike) 『This Hatha Yoga manual is authentic, clear, thorough, precise and well illustrated. For each posture, there is at least one illustrative photo. I adore this DVD! I recently got "Fat Free Yoga" by Ana Brett and Ravi Singh and love it. But this one is really enchanting. I love the dancing and singing at the end. I am no Barbra Streisand, but this is so envigorating, soothing and downright fun. I highly recommend it.』
(Mood-elevating workout) 『Dance the Chakras is an excellent video. Reviewers before me have already done a great job of describing the segments, so I won't go into those. Instead, in case you are feeling at all hesitant about a dance workout as yoga, let me reassure you that you will love this! I am the most awkward dancer out there, and at the end of this dvd, I feel great, happy, self-assured, and positive. It's not about looking a certain way, but feeling a certain way. At the end of this workout, I am always smiling. Beyond the great emotional lift, you'll also be burning calories, and working on balance and flexibility, so you can't lose! Try it, you'll love it!』
(Different&Fun) 『I initially just watched the dvd before actually using it and, I'll admit, it was a little humorous to me. I also felt really intimidated by the limberness of Ana, BUT, upon attempting the dvd and exercises I felt really invigorated and inspired.
Although I have experience in hatha yoga, this kundalini yoga is new to me and this dvd is extremely educational, fun and a work out! I found myself commenting on how I couldn't believe my body was sore when I didn't even break a sweat! I am so motivated to increase my flexibility and the practice of yoga.
I can't wait to buy more from this series:)』
(Really fun workout!) 『This is one of my favorite Ravi&Ana DVD's. It is SOO FUN!!!! I would recommend using the matrix option on this DVD. Start out with the breath primer if you are just starting out with kundalini, then tune in, warm up stretches, and the first set of exercise. Then I would recommend choosing three of the dances, then doing the second set, followed by the other three dances, and then the relaxation, meditation and closing prayer.
The way the DVD is set up is the you do the two exercise sets in a row, then all of the dances, which didn't sound like a good idea to me, as I wanted to dance!
Customizing this DVD is essential. The workout sets are great as usual, but the dances are just AMAZING. Don't expect to "learn" how to dance from these videos. While Ana demonstrates some dances the point is to just feel them out, I wouldn't try to copy her movements exactly, just use them as inspiration. You really have to just get into the grove and let go, I was really sweating after doing three of the dances!!!!!
Afterwards I felt so great. This is a must have DVD if you are into Ravi&Ana!

(Wonderful For Stress Relief) 『This is my go-to dvd when I'm stressed out. Nothing makes me feel as buttery and blissful as the yoga portion of Dance the Chakras. If I'm Really Stressed Out, I would do the yoga twice--it's that good. I have a huge dvd collection and lots of times my focus changes to other fitness dvds. Crosstraining is good, but some dvds are essential. I always regret when I've lapsed in doing DTC. My next purchase will be Journey Through the Chakras as it seems to be a longer version of DTC.
Ravi's dvds can seem strange upon viewing. I initially thought the yoga portion was pointless. However, as a yoga and kundalini newbie I decided follow the advice of other yoga enthusiasts. I'm glad I did. I was able to do all of the yoga with a little practice.
If the yoga portion of Dance the Chakras is my meds, then the dance portion is my fun. I love the music and the variety this dvd offers. The chaptering is also great as I can do whatever sections I want. A large portion of my exercise collection is dancey dvds. The mix of dancey&yoga in this dvd is perfection. It's never going to leave my collection.』 『NOW FEATURING THE DESIGN YOUR OWN WORKOUT MATRIX MENU OPTION!!!All I can say is wow! This isn't your mother's yoga. Dance the Chakras Yoga Workout features two 30 min. sessions. starting with a complete 30 minute Kundalini Yoga routine invigorating dynamic and profoundly effective just like Ana&Ravi's other workouts. The 2nd set is not your usual "Trance" fare but an energetic pulsating sequence of mostly lead movement routines. This section is pretty aerobic and somewhat intense. Although the moves seem simple those who don't have a dance or aerobic etc. background can easily participate. (This DVD allows the user to pre-program their own workout.) Dance 1 is Tribal Dance. The others feature Funky Temple Dance Dance of Power and Heart Dance. The last two segments can only be described as blissful. That said, excellent presentation and production values, and overall recommended. Well laid out, and a great introduction.』
(Great! :)) 『Just received my order! :) This afternoon I had my 1st 70min workout with this DVD. I have to say that this is really great! I've done yoga on and off for about 1yr with YogaZone's DVD "Gentle Yoga" - it includes two basic, well explained workouts that really prepared me for Shiva Rea. Compared to "Gentle Yoga", this DVD's workouts actually increased my heart rate for quite a bit! Though I'm not very athletic, I know most of the poses already, so I was able to follow all her instructions. But I agree with some of the reviews here - there are poses that require a bit of familiarity and endurance, so they may be a bit too advanced for absolute beginners. But then again... Shiva is a great instructor. Her voice is very calming yet lifting. The workouts are professionally filmed with beautiful sceneries, and the background drumming music is subtle yet energetic. Though some reviewers commented rather negatively on some of Shiva's ambiguous instructions such as "temple of heart", "open heart", "root your feet" etc., I found them to be interesting and at times helpful. Those are abstract, conceptual ideas that are not meant to be scrutinized and taken literally. When the music starts, I get into the mindset and know what to do with my body, everything falls into the right places, and I'd be good to go. The workouts could be a bit more varied though. In the third section Shiva introduces a routine that combines Chataronga, Cobra with Warrior Poses (etc...). I'm pretty sure that she means to go through it a couple of times so the routine becomes familiar and begins to flow. But still it's a tiny bit too much repetition for me. However I did bought Yoga Shakti, Shiva's highest ranked DVD with 3.5 hrs of routines... So i've got nothing to complain :)』
(Not So Much for the Unfit.) 『'No yoga experience necessary' proclaims the box. 'Score!' I think. 'I know squat about yoga, so this should be perfect!'
What they don't mention is that this isn't necessarily for people not already rather fit. Each segment requires a certain level of endurance and strength that many rank beginners just don't have. She does make some modifications, but the moves remain difficult, sometimes prohibitively so. Also, despite the proclamation on the box, it seems as though some foreknowledge of yoga is in fact necessary. Some moves are cued by name rather than by description, which makes the first few viewings difficult to follow.
Overall, I can't really say that I recommend this to beginners in general. Fit beginners, maybe. Advanced beginners in yoga, sure. Not so much everyone else. I wish I could like this DVD, as the scenery is lovely and Ms. Rea obviously knows her stuff, but I just can't get far enough into it to make it worth my while.』
(Good Intro to Flow Yoga) 『I figured this would be a good DVD to start with before I immersed myself into Yoga Shakti. I'm glad I did! I think this is not only a nice introduction to Flow Yoga, but to the instructor herself. I had heard many great reviews about Shiva Rea so I couldn't wait to get my first DVD from her.
First of all, she does an excellent job in breaking down the various poses little by little so you are not overwhelmed. Also, I really appreciated the fact that she introduced gentle variations throughout so you could work up to the more complex poses. The voice over and cuing for the most part are very good and the scenery is gorgeous.
I'll agree with other reviewers in saying that the Savasana at the end is very brief, but other than that, this DVD is a great intro to her style and technique. For the anyone else who may consider purchasing this DVD, getting a book that references the English and Sanskrit names for the poses may be helpful as well.
I hope to buy more of her DVD's soon after I've done this routine for awhile.』
(Comforting, with some room to grow) 『I am a yoga and Pilates instructor- I would say offhand that I am probably not the target audience for this release. However, I am always for new choreography and sequencing ideas, particularly for people who are new to yoga. I've heard much about Rea's comforting, "fluid" instruction, so I thought this would worthwhile for me to explore.
The practice is a little under 70 minutes- longer than most of the classes I teach, and longer than I typically spend on my own practice. The Warmup is about thirteen minutes long, which I feel is too long even in the context of an hour+ practice. There is a primer on Ujayyi Breathing, then linking that breath with arm movements. Then we move to Cat with knee pulls to begin mobilizing the spine, then explore Plank and its variations. Next are introductions to Half Chaturanga, Cobra, Single Leg Locust and Down Dog. Throughout, Rea provided soothing instruction and insights to help people new to yoga and/or working on strength and flexibility.
Next section, Backbends, began standing with diagonal arm sweeps, then a flow between a modified standing Camel and Mountain, then another flow between a Roll Down and Back Bend. Then we moved into a Forward Fold with Chest Opener. Next we moved to our knees, moving to a Knee Lunge then Hamstring Stretch/Half-Split, then Half Chaturanga, Cobra, Half Bow, and Cat with Knee Pulls. Once we've completed the work to both sides, we Roll Up to standing again and move into Side Bends, Back Bends, Chair and Chair with a Twist. After Forward Bend, we move back to Lunge, but this time add a Twist. We use Hamstring Stretch again as a Counter Pose, then move to Quarter Dog to open the upper body. After Half Chaturanga, we continue with Bow, briefly rest, then move to Camel, Hero and move to our backs to relax the back after the Back Bends.
The next segment is called Flexibility Flow, but it is focused completely on the lower body, primarily the hips. We do Knee Pulls, the Number Four Stretch, Hamstring Stretch and Wind Relieving. We next do a Supine Butterfly which turns into a Swaying Hip Opener, still on our backs. Next we sit up and move into an Undulating Butterfly before setting into the full posture. We close that section with Easy Pose.
The next section, Standing Poses, includes some of the poses from the other sections, particularly Lunges and Chaturangas. We perform a Vinyasa including Half Chaturanga, Cobra and Down Dog then move into a Lunge Sequence. A la many vinyasa practices, we repeat the cycle, adding in more challenging back bends (Bow, Locust, High Cobra) and more challenging standing movements (Half Warrior, Half Side Angle, Warrior 2. The entire practice concludes with Savasana.
My verdict: The warm up and the back bend sequence were of the most use to me in that they provided the most variety. However, it started going downhill for me with the Hip Openers and the Standing Sequence- I just felt that there was not enough variety, and I would think that most beginners would need variety even more than seasoned practitioners. However, Rea does create a peaceful, relaxing and encouraging atmosphere, so for that reason I'll bump my review up to three stars.』 『Studio: Acorn Media Release Date: 11/11/2008 Run time: 70 minutes』 『The title,Flow Yoga for Beginners, is slightly oxymoronic, as "flow" yoga, at least as practiced by many yogis and yoginis, is by its very nature more aerobic, vigorous, and difficult than the yoga undertaken by most beginning students. But leave it to Shiva Rea, whose growing series of home videos is arguably the best on the market, to reconcile those two disparate factors--for the most part, anyway. Rea defines the flow concept as "the ability to move freely in an unbroken string of awareness"; in more pedestrian terms, it's a continuous sequence of poses, one moving freely and naturally to the next, which tends to generate heat and deepen control of the breath. The breath, specificallyujjayi pranayama, is the centerpiece of Rea's introduction to this 70-minute program; her instructions in the use of this basic but hard-to-explain technique are excellent. Thereafter, she spends about 20 minutes on backbends (from simple standing and lunging backbends to poses like cobra, bow, locust, and camel, which can be very challenging for inexperienced students); this segment also includes a few twists. Next, the "Relaxing Flexibility Flow" sequence consists mostly of counterposes such as the "happy baby" andbadakonasana(cobbler's pose), while the "Standing Pose Flow," the longest and best of the lot, focuses on poses including and derived fromvirabadrasana II(aka warrior II), one of the common standing positions. It's all good, but while Rea provides detailed instruction and simpler variations for many poses, genuine beginners would do well to study the program closely before attempting it; and even then, poses likechaturanga dandasana(a lowered pushup) are rarely taught in beginners classes, even in their easier versions. As for the lush Hawaiian scenery, well, great, but the practice of hatha yoga ultimately depends on goinginside, even to the point of doing it with eyes closed. Still and all, while it's not quite up to the standards of Shiva Rea's other videos,Flow Yoga for Beginnersis a winner.--Sam Graham』
